Our Chalet 2011 International Opportunity for Girls and Adults
June 28-July 7, 2011

Spend ten days exploring Central Europe on a Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains-sponsored international destination!

Begin your ten-day experience in Frankfurt, Germany as we travel throughout Central Europe. Girls will plan their itinerary which might include traveling to Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. You could go slide down into the salt mines in Germany, explore the Glacier Gardens that were formed almost 20 million years ago in Luzern, Switzerland, see what it feels likes to be Cinderella by visiting Neushwanstein Castle in Germany, or hear the sounds of Mozart at his birth house in Salzburg, Austria. Girls will have the opportunity to visit and/or stay at Our Chalet, one of the four World Centers, built by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. As a group you’ll plan your own itinerary.

There will be an adult-only trip in connection with the girl trip. The adult trip will stay in the same accommodations as the girls, but they will plan their own daily itineraries as a group.

Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains will send a group of up to 25 girls ages 15 to 18 (at the time of the event, freshmen in college at the time are able to participate) and 3 adults. Adult trip will send a minimum of 10.

Girls must have had some experience away from home overnight for a minimum of a week, a sense of adventure, camping experience, ability to work in a group setting, willingness to interact with others from different backgrounds, and a good sense of humor. Adult chaperones must have experience working with adolescent girls, current First Aid certification, Basic Outdoor Living Skills certification and camping experience with groups of girls, willingness to listen and learn patience, and good organizational skills.

The estimated cost of the event is $4000 per girl and $3000 per adult chaperone, and $4000 per adult for the entire event including airfare, lodging, activity and entry fees, additional insurance, train and subway fares, and food. Financial assistance is available to girls. Cookie Dough can be applied towards the girl’s fee. The group may decide to conduct money-earning activities to help defray costs.

All interested in participating in Our Chalet 2011 need to fill out an application form and submit three letters of references. Deadline for applications is May 15, 2010. The interview portion of the application process will take place during late May, at a place to be determined.

Challenge and Change 2010

We are pleased to announce that Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains has been accepted to participate in the Challenge and Change program for the 3rd year. Challenge and Change is a leadership development program from the Girl Scouts of the USA for girls in Rural Communities and is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Have you ever asked yourself; “As a teenager, how can I start something that will help my community?” or “What will it take to convince others to help?”
These are just a few questions teen girls are asking – and answering in powerful ways – through Challenge and Change.

Challenge and Change is a program to encourage girls to become “change-makers” as they envision and start long-term Take Action Projects. Girls will begin by participating in a weekend retreat held during the spring of 2010, where they will learn leadership, problem solving, and entrepreneurial skills. During this process girls will be inspired to learn more about themselves, discover what effective leadership looks like, connect with local experts, and explore issues that are affecting their communities.

Challenge and Change teaches girls skills to identify community problems, recognize and build on local assets, and design a sustainable solution and action plan. After the retreat, girls return home and work with community partners to put their ideas into ACTION!

We would like to invite you to participate in this year’s Challenge and Change program! Open to girls 12-16 in New Hampshire and Vermont. Application and References due by May 21, 2010.

Program is FREE! Application is required.

New Hampshire State Senate Page

Are you in high school?  Are you interested in learning more about how the New Hampshire State Senate works?  Then here is an opportunity for you.  You can be a Senate page for a day.  As a Senate page, students will be asked to assist the Sergeant-at-Arms and the Senate Clerk’s office with various duties pertaining to Senate session.  Some of their official duties include: distributing important legislative documents (such as ‘floor amendments’), making photocopies of pending legislation, and even bringing senators lunch from the State House cafeteria.  The program requires a one-day commitment and transportation to Concord, NH.

While participating in the Senate Page Program for the day, students will be participating in the actual Senate’s session.  They will be witnessing the New Hampshire State Legislature ‘making the laws’.  Senate pages will get to meet and interact with actual state senators as well as the staff of the N. H. State Senate.  The program offers a unique glance into the internal workings of state government and in doing so, seeks to foster a spirit of civic engagement that will remain with participating students into adulthood.  As part of their experience, students will be given a brief tour of the New Hampshire State House; a Senatorial Certificate of Appreciation signed by the senate president and their local senator; a copy of the New Hampshire Constitution; as well as a brochure on “How a Bill Becomes a Law” and the “History of the New Hampshire Senate.”

If you are interested in learning more about this program or participating in it, please contact Patricia Mellor at pmellor@gi rlscoutsgwm.org.
