Adult Learning Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the course?

For the safety of our girls and volunteers we do not give specific locations of our courses or properties online. The address and directions will be included in your course confirmation.

Why isn't there a course in my town?

Courses are scheduled in locations based on need in an area and the availability of facilitators. If you can not make any of the scheduled courses you can call 1-888-474-9686 or e-mail training@girlscoutsgwm.org to ask to be put on a wait list. The wait list is used to determine where future courses should be held and people on the wait list are contacted when new courses are scheduled in your region.

What if I can’t register online?

Mail or fax a completed registration form to Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains Adult Learning, PO Box 10832 Bedford, NH 03110. Fax 1-603-627-4169

What courses must I take? What are the Essentials ?

After returning a volunteer application and criminal background check, all volunteers must take “Volunteer Essentials” which is an on-line and face-to-face course. It is an orientation to the Girl Scout mission, vision and goals, council policies, guidelines, resources and contacts. “Volunteer Essentials” is arranged through your Service Center or Service Unit Team. They will assist you in completing the on-line portion and upon completion of the face to face version they will tell you what to expect for Leadership Essentials.

“Leadership Essentials” is for leaders planning to work with girls of any age level. It provides an in-depth focus on delivering girls the Girl Scout Leadership Experience – the outcomes/benefits we’re striving to achieve for girls and the processes that best achieve those outcomes. Your choice on the type or “pathway” of your volunteer work determines which “pathway essential” you will next complete. Anyone who is planning on working with girls in a leadership role needs to take “Leadership Essentials”.

Volunteers who will be working with girls in troops must take “Troop Essentials” which provides the basic information needed for planning and running successful troop meetings. It covers the roles and responsibilities of the Girl Scout leader, methods of obtaining parent and guardian support, important elements of troop meetings, girl and adult planning, finances, how to evaluate with girls, and crisis and risk management.

First Aid and CPR- is required for groups engaging in physically demanding activities, activities involving a potential for injury or when taking trips away from the regular meeting place. Outdoor Skills- required for adults taking girls on day hike, cooking in the outdoors, spending an overnight outdoors, and camping.

How will I know if I am placed in a class?

You will receive a confirmation when we process your application and the course has met the minimum number of participants needed to run the course. If the minimum required number of participants for the course is not yet met, you will not receive a confirmation until either the number reaches the minimum required OR the course is cancelled on the deadline date listed in your course description. When your registration is processed and the course is already full, you will be notified immediately. Confirmation and cancellation notices are sent either by letter or e-mail depending the choice indicated on your registration form.

What if I don’t show up for a course, will I get my money back?

Only cancellations made more than 3 business days prior to a course will be refunded. Failure to show for a course without proper notification will result in loss of payment.

Are courses ever cancelled?

Yes. Courses that do not meet the minimum number of participants required will be cancelled. The council also reserves the right to cancel courses if the facilitator is ill or unable to make the course (remember, our facilitators are volunteers, too) or in the event of inclement weather. Registered participants will be notified of cancellations.

May I bring my daughter?

No. We cannot accommodate children, infants or pets at courses. Service animals are permitted.

May I save a spot for a friend?

No. Participants must register on their own.

May I take training with someone other than Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains?

If you have documentation of your completion of  “Volunteer Essentials” or “Leadership Essentials” or “Troop Essentials” with another Girl Scout Council, you will only need a specific orientation to the policies,  procedures and practices of the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains.  Certain CPR & First aid courses from the American Red Cross, American Safety & Health Institute, Emergency First Response, EMP America, National Safety Council, and American Heart Association will be accepted.
