Swift Water Paddlers win first place in endurance race
BAINBRIDGE, NY – Girl Scouts from around New Hampshire competed in the General Clinton Canoe Regatta the weekend of May 23-25, taking home several trophies.
Coach Stephanie Matte said the team won first place in the 15-mile endurance race, second and seventh places in the 10-mile endurance, fourth in the younger girl sprint, and fifth in the older girl sprint.
Team members include Marissa M., 18, of Merrimack; Natalie F., 15, of Milford; Leila W., 15, of Milford; Stella F., 14, of Bedford; Aria V., 14, of Nashua; Asher R., 16, of Nashua; Zoe B., 15, of Nashua; Addison O., 13, of Nashua; Madison D., 11, of Nashua; Elizabeth G., 12, of Nashua; Miranda B., 14, Nashua; Tiana C., 14, of Nashua; and Nalou A., 14, of Nashua. Coaches are Stephanie Matte, Erin Calvert, Kate Shaffer and Vanessa Horton.
The weekend was very cold, rainy, and muddy, according to coach Matte. “Despite these conditions, everyone had a great time and even left the weekend talking about the excitement for next season!”
The team is celebrating its 50th anniversary and looks forward to hosting a celebration this fall.
Girl Scouts in Grades 6-12 practice from March through May and compete in the Great Smith River Regatta in New Hampshire and the General Clinton Regatta in New York each year. They learn the basics of canoeing, explore sprints, relay teams, whitewater, in-water canoe switches, and build lifetime friendships.
