Date: Mon Oct 13, 3:30 PM EDT - Mon Oct 13, 3:35 PM EDT
The STEM Van is coming back to Vermont! Choose from one of three
90-minute programs: Chef Science (all), Survival STEM (recommended
J+), or Space Science (recommended D-J), and have the van come to you!
Participants will work towards badges in the cooking series, outdoor
series, or space science series.
Chef Science
Girl Scouts, explore the science of cooking!
Learn about how gluten development affects texture, how temperature
affects gelatin, and how yeast reacts to sugar by kneading up some
pasta dough, mixing up a chocolate mousse, and experimenting with
yeast! Girl Scouts will take home ready-to-cook pasta and enjoy their
chocolate mousse during the program. Pasta is eggless but requires
flour with gluten. Chocolate mousse contains dairy. This program
fulfills steps from the Brownie Home Scientist, Brownie Snacks, and
Junior Simple Meals badge. This program also works on skills helpful
to troops working towards the Cadette-Ambassador cooking series
badges.
Survival STEM
Girl Scouts, explore STEM
concepts in camping! Learn how the world of camping relates to STEM by
exploring the science of fire, technology of water filtration,
engineering of tents and tarp shelters, and math in navigation. This
program is designed for Juniors and up. This program requires an
outdoor space. Participants will learn about the science of fire
through building a fire (if permitted by location) or by making an
edible fire. Troops may request to use a GSGWM property at no
additional cost (if available). This program teaches outdoor skills
and fulfills steps or partial steps from the outdoor series of
badges.
Space Science
Girl Scouts, explore outer
space! Learn about the planets, the moon, and the stars through a
series of activities. Make moon sand to learn about craters, assemble
a flipbook of the moon to learn about the phases, assemble a
constellation projector to learn about the stars, test straw rockets
to learn about the need for revision in the scientific process, and
make air dry clay planet beads to learn about the planets. This
program is designed for Daisies through Juniors. This program fulfills
steps in the Space Science badge series.
