Epsom Gold Award Girl Scout honored as a Rising Star by StayWorkPlay

Morgan Summerton worked to educate police, first responders regarding deaf drivers
MANCHESTER, NH – Gold Award Girl Scout Morgan Summerton was honored as the 2024 Rising Stars Awards High School Student of the Year at StayWorkPlay’s awards ceremony on Oct. 17 at the Currier Museum of Art.
Summerton, 18, of Epsom, was recognized for her advocacy for legislative changes that would allow for a disability notice on driver’s licenses or license plates, ensuring better interactions and outcomes for those in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Her exceptional leadership, community service, and academic achievements at the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains and Sunapee Middle High School set her apart as a Rising Star in New Hampshire.
“Morgan is an outstanding example of the leadership Girl Scouts encourages,” said Patricia K. Mellor, CEO of the Girl Scout council. “As a Gold Award Girl Scout, she has worked to make the world a better place. Her efforts to create awareness of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community among first responders and police will no doubt save lives.”
StayWorkPlay’s Rising Stars Awards strive to celebrate New Hampshire’s remarkable young people and the employers who go the extra mile to recruit and retain them. StayWorkPlay is a nonprofit working to make it easier for young people to stay, work, and play in the Granite State.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor that can be achieved by a Girl Scout in high school. A Gold Award project requires at least 80 hours of service and must achieve a sustainable positive change in one’s community, state, or the world. Summerton spent more than 100 hours on her project, titled Education for First Responders about Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Drivers. She is part of the hard-of-hearing community herself.
Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, the council serving all of New Hampshire and Vermont, is proud to see Morgan Summerton chosen for this incredible honor.
