World Thinking Day event brings area Girl Scout troops together
DURHAM, NH – Dozens of Girl Scout troops shared information, food, activities, and sisterhood at a World Thinking Day event at Oyster River High School on Sunday, April 7. With 24 troops attending, there were 186 Girl Scouts and 60 leaders and mentors from Lee, Barrington, Dover, Madbury, Durham, Nottingham, Strafford, Rochester, Dover, Newmarket, Hampton and Exeter.
Typically, World Thinking Day is observed by Girl Scouts in February, but the Circle of Friends Girl Scouts held off until the end of cookie season to celebrate the annual tradition. This year’s national theme was “Our World, Our Thriving Future: The Environment and Global Poverty.” Local Girl Scouts of all ages were encouraged to think not only about what each country is known for, but also to consider water scarcity and the issues it causes around the world.
Corinne George and her daughter’s troop, Troop 10019, organized the event. George provided each Girl Scout with a necklace with a wave design, noting that “As we celebrate World Thinking Day, we know that change starts with one small action… one small ripple… one small wave.”
To bring home the point, Troop 10019’s booth on South Sudan provided information on the lack of drinkable water there and had Girl Scouts see what it’s like to have to carry buckets of water across long distances just to survive. The troop has eight members who are juniors in high school.
Other displays included a wide variety of foods, including ginger lemonade from Mali, noodles and seaweed from South Korea, maple cookies from Canada, tostadas from Mexico, and a whole variety of foods from Jamaica. As each girl visited a “country,” she got a special passport stamped as she tried the treats offered and learned about the country.
At each booth, Girl Scouts did various activities, read the posters, and collected “swaps” – homemade items that represented the country.
Girl Scouts also donated food for a local food pantry and cash to the Juliette Gordon Low Fund/World Friendship fund.
Girl Scouts offers an opportunity for girls to learn about the world and how to make it a better place for all of us. Now is a great time for families to consider joining Girl Scouts. See www.girlscoutsgwm.org.
We Are Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
