Troop Spotlight: January 2023

January 31, 2023

Girl Scouts around our council are always active – camping, traveling, doing service projects, and making the world a better place. Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains invites all Girl Scouts in our council to share photos of their adventures, achievements, projects, and more. Send your photos to us at customercare@girlscoutsgwm.org. Be sure to include a description of the event, your troop number and levels involved, when it took place, and any other relevant information.

Honoring veterans

Girls from Service unit 219 from Pelham and Hudson helped Wreaths Across America over multiple weekends check and replace flags at veterans gravesites to prepare for the wreath laying ceremony. And then on December 17th they laid wreaths at the graves of veterans. They did a great job helping a wonderful cause.

Food pantry helpers

The juniors of Pelham, NH, Troop 58302 helped sort food that was collected at the Pelham Food Pantry. Great job Alison, Grace, Emma and Nikki!

Thanksgiving meal makers

For the past four years, Troop 58461 has baked for the Hudson, NH, Fish & Game annual Thanksgiving dinner. The girls make mini loaf breads that they donate each year. For the past two years the girls and our families helped prep food on the day before Thanksgiving.

Hudson Fish & Game provides meals for up to 500 people each year. The girls have peeled potatoes and sweet potatoes, bagged dinner rolls, made fruit bags, cut and boxed pies, and packaged cranberry sauce. It is a wonderful troop tradition that they look forward to each year. This year, eight Girl Scouts turned into 19 volunteers.

Pelham toy drive

Each year, Troop 58461 delivers toys to the Pelham Fire Department, where they are greeted by firefighters and usually a piece of equipment. This year there was an ambulance. For January, the girls are finishing blankets they are making for Family Promise in Nashua. This is the second year they are making blankets for the residents.

“We are super proud of our GIRLS!!! They are thoughtful and caring young ladies,” said leaders Kris Melanson, Samantha St. Pierre, and Tricia Jette-Gonthier.

Reindeer Rendezvous

Troop 30228 of Waterbury, VT, participated in the Reindeer Rendezvous event on December 18 by selling handmade reindeer and snowmen ornaments. This event was held outside their local bookstore with two real reindeer visiting from the Vermont Reindeer Farm. The remaining ornaments were donated at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing in Berlin, VT. Using their proceeds, the troop voted to help the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital Child Life program by donating Play Doh, Legos, board books, and fleece blankets; as well as the North Country Animal League, donating canned and dry food for dogs and cats plus cat treats.

Magical bakers

Girl Scouts are enjoying our Magical Baking series, a monthly virtual lesson in making delicious things to eat. At left is Junior Lexie of eastern Massachusetts making popovers. At right, Brownies Zoe and Madeline from Troop 30314 in Randolph Center, VT make snack bars.

Girl Scouts from everywhere are invited to take part! Check out the next Magical Baking event and join in!

Sledding, snowshoes, and s’mores

Brownie Sehanya and other Girl Scouts enjoyed a great winter day at Camp Seawood with other Girl Scouts making the most of the winter snow and warming up by a campfire.

More Girl Scouts enjoyed the same kind of winter fun at Camp Twin Hills as they tried to “catch a snowman.”

Skating skills

Girl Scouts from seven troops around Keene, NH, enjoyed skating at the Keene Ice Arena on January 16. Participating were troops 59786, 62200, 20902, 12588, 60000, 13028, 62354, and 51018, with 41 Girl Scouts, siblings, and parents.

Making the world a better place

Concord, NH, Troop 20507 took some time during a winter lodge weekend to make cards for Operation Gratitude and blankets for the Live and Let Live animal shelter.
