Derry Girl Scout leader honored as a Volunteer of Excellence

Amity Ziegler has led Troop 12130 since 2018
DERRY, NH – Amity Ziegler, 45, of Derry, has been named a Volunteer of Excellence by Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, the council serving Girl Scouts across New Hampshire and Vermont.
The award was presented to Ziegler on June 18. Each of the youth members of Troop 12130 wrote a nomination letter to recognize her, as did co-leader Bethany Layne.
Ziegler joined the troop as leader in 2018 when the Girl Scouts were Brownies. Now all are Cadettes. The troop has gone primitive camping, attended badge blasts, and taken a trip to Boston, all toward earning specific badges.
Layne said, “As a scientist, Amity contributes to our Girl Scout troop with her strong STEM expertise. She has exceptional organizational and administrative skills, a detail-oriented approach to planning and execution, as well as a firm grasp on numbers and finances. She has been a cheerleader for our girls (and me) to step outside our comfort zone while participating alongside the scouts in new experiences, including hiking, roller skating, skiing, ziplining, axe throwing and horseback riding. She has also shared her artistic talents to teach bookbinding and painting skills, and was instrumental in helping the girls create a troop cookbook.
Ziegler contributed 353 hours to supporting the troop’s Girl Scout Cookie booths, helping them sell more than 11,000 packages of cookies, which helped to fund the troop’s many activities.
The Volunteer of Excellence Award recognizes volunteers who have performed beyond the expectation of their position and have supported the council’s mission delivery goals.
We Are Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
